Unfamiliar Land

“Nest”

Morro Bay, CA

Since 2022, I have been creating a series of place-specific, ephemeral land art called “Unfamiliar Land”.

These works reflect the places in which they are made and use only naturally occurring materials and simple hand tools.

The works also draw attention to humankind’s increasingly fraught disconnection from its natural environment.

“Nest”

Morro Bay, CA, 2023. This sculpture embodies the heron rookery where it was built.

A driftwood log with tangled branches on a sandy beach near the water, with trees and rocky hills in the background.

“Deer Kill Adobe”

Fort Davis, Texas, 2023. Deer Kill Adobe reflects the process of decay as well as the need for shelter.

A dried animal carcass lying on rocky desert ground with sparse shrubs and trees in the background.

“Bridge”

Portland, Oregon, 2022. This sculpture represents a bridge between the conscious and unconscious world of mankind.

“Island”

Lake Vermillion, Minnesota, 2022. “Island” reflects the glacier created landscape of the boundary waters of Northern Minnesota.

A small floating island made of tree branches, leaves, and moss in a body of water, with a forested shoreline in the background.

“River”

Stanley, Idaho, 2022. Made from the dead sticks of yellow pine trees, “River” conjures a skeleton or fossil - flowing like a river - signifying the cycle of life.
